Session Four, “Moment to Shine,” kicked off Monday morning as members gathered for another impactful day at the 2026 California FFA State Leadership Conference.
Hailey from the Turlock FFA Chapter delivered a powerful rendition of the National Anthem, setting the tone for the session.
State FFA Officers Noah Kamea Stanisai and Tessa Camacho chaired the session, opening with ceremonies that created a celebratory and inspiring atmosphere.
Members first heard remarks from Karen Ross, Secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture, who spoke on the importance of agriculture in California and encouraged members to use the skills they develop through FFA, sharing, “I hope you will think about public service because we need you.”
The session continued with the presentation of scholarship awards, recognizing outstanding members for their academic achievements, leadership, and commitment to FFA. Congratulations to all recipients for their dedication and hard work.
Attendees then heard from Tony Thurmond, who emphasized the value of education and leadership, reminding members, “We need leaders with the experience you have to lead our state into the next generation.”
A unique highlight of the session followed with an interview featuring FBI Officer and FFA alumni, Jaime Magallon, who shared insight into career pathways and leadership beyond traditional agricultural roles, noting that “FFA is near and dear to my heart.”
The session then transitioned into Proficiency Awards, celebrating excellence in Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) projects. Awards were presented across a wide range of categories, including Agricultural Communications, Agriscience Research, Plant Systems, Beef Production Entrepreneurship, and Equine Science Placement, recognizing the diverse talents and dedication of FFA members across the state.
Energy filled the arena during the regional competition game, “Guess the Tune,” as members cheered on their representatives. Points were awarded with Southern earning one point, North Coast and Central each earning two points, pushing Central into the overall lead by just one point over San Joaquin.
The session concluded with a heartfelt retiring address from State FFA Treasurer Daren Deftereos, who reflected on his journey of excellence and the importance of spreading light in others’ lives. Sharing the story of his former classmate Emily Carpenter and her organization, Golden Positivity, he reminded members, “What matters more than your circumstances is that you persevere through them.” He concluded his address with a performance of Angels Among Us by Alabama.
The next pin drop was announced, titled “New Light, New Legacy,” and can be found at workshops and at the Army and Air Force booths, encouraging members to get involved and continue exploring the conference experience.
Session Four wrapped up with closing ceremonies, leaving members motivated and ready to continue the conference experience at Session Five, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
