Session Two, “Chasing the Sun,” began bright and early as members filled the arena, ready for another inspiring day at the 2026 California FFA State Leadership Conference.
State FFA President Lily Vaughan and State Treasurer Daren Deftereos chaired the session, opening with energy that set the tone for a day focused on growth, leadership, and perseverance. State Secretary Ryan Taylor reported attendance of over 8,000 members and guests. Following the opening, members were treated to an incredible performance of the National Anthem by Jose from the Dinuba FFA Chapter.
Members then heard from keynote speaker, Dr. Temple Grandin, a world-renowned animal scientist, professor, and advocate. Grandin shared powerful insights on embracing differences, thinking creatively, and finding success through determination. She challenged members to view their strengths through different ways of thinking: visual, spatial, and verbal thinking, emphasizing that “we need different kinds of minds because they bring different approaches to solving problems.”
Session Two also celebrated outstanding individuals who make a lasting impact on agricultural education. The Star Administrator, Star Counselor, and Star Supporting Staff Awards recognized those who go above and beyond to support students, teachers, and FFA programs across the state. Congratulations to this year’s finalists and winners:
- Star Administrator Winner: Luke Browning – Nevada Joint Union (Superior Region)
- Star Counselor Winner: Wendy Ward – Bakersfield Foothill (San Joaquin Region)
- Star Supporting Staff Winner: Jennifer Conor – Sonoma (Southern Region)
This session’s regional competition brought energy and excitement as representatives competed in a fast-paced cup-grabbing challenge. The San Joaquin Region representative claimed the win, earning their region three points.
In addition, new and reinstated chapters were recognized, highlighting the continued growth and reach of the National FFA Organization within California. Congratulations and welcome to the following chapters: Esparto Middle, Fulton-Spring Hills Christian, Brawley Middle, Bakersfield Centennial, Granada Hills, Salinas Rancho Cielo, Santa Maria St. Joseph, Woodland Hills Hale Middle, Willows Walden Academy, and reinstated chapters Burney and Bakersfield Liberty.
The session concluded with a heartfelt retiring address from State FFA Sentinel Sophia Camou. Reflecting on her Basque heritage and Catholic faith, as well as her year of service, she shared meaningful lessons and encouraged members to create a welcoming environment within FFA. She left the audience with a powerful reminder: “You are loved, you are enough, you are welcomed in.”
The second pin drop was announced, encouraging members to explore the College and Career booths at the Career Expo in search of the “Dawn” pin, located at the Ontario Convention Center.
Session Two wrapped up with closing ceremonies, leaving members inspired and ready to continue the conference experience at Session Three, beginning at 3:00 PM.
